Meet Our September 2011 Sponsor Many thanks to Liz of The Lavender Lizard for sponsoring our September Boxes!
I am very excited to share Liz's interview with all of you! This interview will stay posted on the website until the October 15th. So, grab a cup of coffee or a glass of iced tea and join us as we get to know Liz a bit better! What is your "Real Life" name? Elizabeth Kalka Tell us a bit about yourself. I'm Liz, wife to a yarn-tolerant husband, mother of four handsome sons, and as the only female in our house, I am hopelessly outnumbered (even our two cats are boys)! I live in San Antonio, TX, but I've spent a fair amount of time in the Dallas area and Austin/Round Rock as well.
What is your favorite color? Purple, without a doubt. Green is my second favorite. What are your two most and least favorite movies? My two favorite movies are Say Anything and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I just love how Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor) says "Briiiick" in a southern accent. My least favorite movies are Joe vs. the Volcano and Slam Dance. Never heard of Slam Dance? Just trust me.
What are you reading right now? I'm reading Comanche Moon by Larry McMurtry. It's a prequel to Lonesome Dove.
What is your favorite handmade item either purchased for yourself or received as a gift? I have several quilts that my mother has made for me, and I also have a crocheted afghan that my great-aunt made. There's nothing like curling up under a cozy handmade quilt or afghan.
What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it? Ilearned how to embroider when I was about 7 or 8 when I was a Brownie. I have a square embroidered piece of (what can be nicely described as) burlap where I practiced my stitches, complete with ink lines underneath! Then I added my initials and raided my mother's button stash for embellishments. In my defense as to fabric choice, we were living in La Paz, Bolivia at the time.
Why do you create? I create because I'm inspired to make gifts and practical items for family and friends. Creating provides and outlet to relax and leave the stresses of the day behind.
What inspires you? Usually my inspiration comes from either a particular color or fiber or a need. Sometimes I'm inspired by a special request. Last year for Halloween, I crocheted a sock monkey hat and mittens for a friend and Pikachu hat for my youngest son.
What are your favorite materials? That's easy -- yarn! I'm a yarn-aholic, and I have the stash to prove it! Do you sell only online, or do you also sell in shops and/or at craft shows? I sell online at Etsy. My shops are The Lavender Lizard and The Lavender Ladybug. Apart from creating things, what do you do? Now that all of my sons are in school, I've been working part-time for friends who own a landscaping company. I have a second part-time job taking orders for a shopping channel. I spend a great deal of time driving my boys back and forth to various schools and activities. I love to read, watch movies, and play Words with Friends. I also bowl on a ladies league. My average is up to 140! Where can we find you online? Etsy (The Lavender Lizard) ~ Etsy (The Lavender Ladybug) ~ Blog ~ Facebook ~ Twitter Here a few examples of Liz's work...
