Walking Leaf Co

Meet Our Februray Sponsor

Many thanks to Brigitte of Walking Leaf Co. for sponsoring our February "3Bs"
Little Black Boxes and Grab Bags!

I am very excited to share this interview with all of you! So, grab a cup of coffee or a glass of iced tea and join us as we get to know the lovely lady behind Walking Leaf Co. a bit better!

What is your "Real Life" name?

Brigitte Baker

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I've been married to my wonderful hubby for 12 years. We have 4 kids all together, 2 are mine from a previous marriage and 2 are his from a previous marriage. Our oldest two are grown up and one of them has kids of his own, so we're new grandparents, too! Our younger two are in high school they're 18 and 16. We live in Princeton, TX and have been here almost 6 years, and we really like North Texas. My "day job" is in government purchasing, so when you hear those stories about the federal government paying $110 for a screwdriver, that's me! (Not really, I work for the County, not the Feds!) I really like it, it's different and interesting every day.

What is your favorite color?

Red

What are your two most and least favorite movies?

My all time favorite is an old, old, old sci-fi called Dune (I've always been a sci-fi fan, in books and in movies!) Other favorites include anything from John Cusack (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Grosse Point Blank, Say Anything, etc.), Constantine, American Beauty and Underworld. I don't think I have any I don't like....if a movie doesn't appeal to me, I don't see it. I'm a big film fan, so I tend to find something likeable in every movie I see. I'm not a huge fan of "dumbed down" comedy.....Harold and Kumar, Jackass, etc.

What are you reading right now?

I have a PILE of books on my nightstand (that's pretty much a constant thing!) I just finished the Jaycee Duggard book about her abduction and imprisonment (heartbreaking), and I'm in the middle of the Game of Thrones series and Diana Gabaldon's Voyager series.

What is your favorite handmade item either purchased for yourself or received as a gift?

I'm a big sucker for toiletries! Anything soaps, lotions, sugar scrubs, perfumes....why do you think I started making the stuff? I had to feed my habit! :).

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?

When I was little, I used to visit my grandma in the summer. She had a high school friend (my "aunt" Kate) who had the most GORGEOUS glass buttons you've ever seen. My cousin and I used to make bracelets and necklaces with them and pretend they were our jewels. The buttons looked just like diamonds and rubies. Aunt Kate also taught me how to embroider, I made pillow cases and tea towels at her house.

Why do you create?

One side of me likes to do the things I do at work, negotiating prices and lead times, researching purchases for departments, talking to suppliers about how they can meet the County's needs...but the other side is creative and needs an outlet. Plus, I like cute stuff, but I can't afford to buy every cute thing I see!

What inspires you?

Nature, mostly. I love great nature photography, and I also keep an eye on trends in home decor and fashion (colors, shapes, materials, etc.)

What are your favorite materials?

I make bath and body items and candles, so I work with wax, oils, botanical ingredients, etc. I'm learning fused glass and hope to be working more with that in the future.

Do you sell only online, or do you also sell in shops and/or at craft shows?

Right now I only sell online, but around the end of February I will have a retail space open in downtown Princeton. The shop is called The Connection at City Center and I'll be renting a booth there. Stop in and see us!

Any tips on selling Handmade creations online?

Promote, promote, promote! Nobody can buy your stuff if they don't know you're offering it and where to find you!

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Read, watch TV, blog, surf the internet (by which I mean stalking Pinterest!), work

Where can we find you online?
